Rhythms

Being present in routines and processes and taking time to observe and wonder mark our daily and weekly rhythms. Nature’s calendar and the changing seasons inspire our festive celebrations and yearly rhythms as well.

Daily & Weekly Rhythms

We believe children learn through process and daily routines of the class including arrival, circle time, stories and song, shared snack, classroom responsibilities, and free play time in nature.

These are the times of day when children practice collectively giving their sustained attention to something (circle time, for example) or when they practice order, spatial awareness, or a sense of responsibility in belonging to a group (through listening, for example, or taking turns).

Each class also practices weekly rhythms with regular rotations through yoga, gardening, baking, Spanish and other small group time.

These daily and weekly rhythms provide a fluid pattern—a reliable yet responsive framework—that gives children a sense of order, control, and comfort while allowing for flexibility, spontaneity, and creativity.

Yearly Rhythms

Seasonally informed learning experiences create a deeper sense of connection with the cyclical quality of nature. We celebrate these seasonal milestones in the year together as full-school community:

  • Dia De Los Muertos/Monarchs Celebration (November)

  • Lantern Walk, evening family event (November)

  • Stone Soup/Gratitude Celebration (November)

  • Winter Solstice Celebration (December)

  • Valentine’s Celebration/Friendship and Care (February)

  • Spring Equinox Celebration (March)

  • Earth Day Celebration/Root Monster Festival (April)

  • End-of-Year Family Gathering (May)

“As children observe, reflect, and share nature’s patterns and rhythms, they are participating in a process that promotes scientific and ecological awareness, problem-solving, and creativity.” ~Deb Matthews Hensley
